Setting a perpetual calendar is not like setting a watch.
A three hand automatic takes ten seconds to reset. Pull the crown, set the time, done.
An annual calendar, a perpetual, a moonphase or a dual time is a different job. Day, date, month, moon phase, second time zone, each in the right order, each within a window where the movement will accept the change. Get the sequence wrong on some references and you are booking a service appointment, not fixing a date.
A watch that never stops never needs any of that.

Skip it if
Your collection is time and date only. A Submariner, a Datejust, an Oyster Perpetual. Ten seconds with the crown and you are current. We would rather tell you that than sell you a box.
Get one if
You own a perpetual calendar, annual calendar, moonphase, GMT or triple calendar. Or you rotate more than three watches and are tired of resetting whichever one you reach for.
Does a winder harm the movement?
No, and the concern is worth addressing directly because you will read otherwise.
A winder turns the rotor the same way your wrist does, then rests. Ours runs in programmed cycles with rest periods, not continuously. The lubricants stay distributed, the mainspring stays wound, and the movement does what it was built to do.
What does cause problems is a cheap motor that never stops, or one loud enough that you unplug it and forget. Both are motor quality problems, not winder problems.

The part that matters
Everything here is the motor.
A winder is a box, a rotor and a motor. The box is joinery and the rotor is a cuff. The motor is the part that either runs silently for a decade or starts ticking in month four.
Ours are Japanese Mabuchi. They are not the cheapest available and that is the point.
If it becomes audible within three years we replace it.
